At Lynah: Women’s Ice Hockey Finishes Home Games Strong, 11-1-0.

Last week, Cornell Women’s Ice Hockey hosted Brown University and Yale University on Friday February 15, 2019 and Saturday 16, 2019.

The team rebounded from a challenging weekend on the road, where Clarkson University shut out the Big Red 4-0 on February 8th and St. Lawrence drew a tie with the Big Red on February 9th. At Lynah Rink on the 15th of February, Cornell Women’s Hockey defeated Brown University 4-1. With less than a day of rest, the Big Red shut out Yale University 4-0 on February 16th. At home the Women’s Hockey team improves to 11-1-0 and 18-3-6 overall.

Compared to earlier performances versus Brown and Yale in November 2018, Cornell boasted more favorable outcomes in February 2019. Previously, Cornell lost 3-4 to Brown in November, but were able to limit Brown to only 1 goal in the 4-1 victory. Although Cornell also won against Yale in November, the victory was a narrow 4-3 battle decided in the third period when Cornell scored three times. In February, Cornell distributed their successful scoring opportunities throughout the game and shut out Yale 4-0.

Overall, the Big Red is nearing the end of an impressive season. Ranked 4th in NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey, Cornell also had several players earn individual recognition in ECAC Hockey. Namely Kristin O’Neill has the fifth highest number of goals, 21, and goaltender Marlène Boissonnault has the third highest save percentage, 0.726. Although O’Neill and Boissonnault are upperclassmen, the future for the team looks bright as the freshman and sophomore classes also have top offensive goal scorers and competitive goaltenders.

Upcoming games for the Big Red include trips to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on February 22nd and Union College February 23rd. These away games conclude the 2018-2019 season for Cornell Women’s Ice Hockey.
