Athlete of the Week: 10/13 RELEASE: ITHACA, NY– BRSN has named senior safety Jelani Taylor as this week’s Athlete of the Week. Last Saturday, Taylor swept the field with 12 total tackles, an interception, and three pass breakups. Just short of joining Cornell University’s ‘Top 10 List,’ Jelani has a record 22 career passes defended. He had a huge impact on the final tally of the Harvard game, bringing up the score for Cornell after a rough start. The defense was key in this game, and they were able to limit Harvard to just 336 yards, led by Jelani and the rest of the defenders. Jelani will be playing again soon for the next football game scheduled on October 19th at Schoellkopf Field against Colgate.
BRSN: What was your mindset going into the weekend against Harvard?
JT: My mindset was to really play with a lot of energy and confidence. I knew my teammates would look to me to make plays, so I was just really focused on doing my job and playing fast.
BRSN: How did you first get started with football, and what kept you in the sport?
JT: I first got started with tackle football when I was eight. I fell in love with the family-aspect and the physicality of the sport. It’s been one of the only constants in my life.
BRSN: Why did you choose Cornell?
JT: I chose Cornell after first being recruited, and then just feeling like it offered the best combination of a quality education and a quality football experience.
BRSN: What is your greatest football memory?
JT: My greatest football memory is from my freshman year of high school when I was playing quarterback. In the first game, I threw the game-winning touchdown to my brother in overtime. It was against our rival Flint Northwestern.
BRSN: How do you like to prepare for games?
JT: I prepare for games by meditating and getting treatment. Then, I stretch and listen to Lauryn Hill or some R&B. Right before the game, I start listening to some harder music like G Herbo or Sada Baby.
BRSN: What are your expectations for this season?
JT: My expectations for this season are to go 1-0 every week.
