Our first athlete of the week John Scearce met with BRSN to discuss the current state of Cornell Soccer and his personal relationship with the sport he excels. BRSN: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. What was your mindset going into this past weekend? JS: Going into the Lafayette game we knew we were going to face a good opponent who plays with a very high work rate. We knew they were not a very technical team, but they work very hard on both sides of the pitch which makes them very dangerous. Our main focus was to outwork them as a team and control the tempo of the game. My mindset going into the game was just to be relentless the full 90 minutes and leave it all on the field. BRSN: How did you first get started with soccer, and what kept you in the sport? JS: I first started playing soccer at the age of 4 when my parents signed me up in a local league in my hometown. I fell in love with the sport the day I started playing. As I got older it really became a passion of mine which is why I have kept playing and will hopefully continue to play after Cornell. BRSN: Why did you choose Cornell? JS: I chose Cornell because of the coaching staff and their vision to make the soccer program one of the best programs in the nation. During my visit back in January I really got to know John and Drew and I felt a good connection with them, which is something I didn’t get out of other schools I visited. Also, I get the once in a lifetime opportunity to graduate with an Ivy League degree. BRSN: What is your favorite soccer memory?
JS: My favorite soccer memory has to be last season playing in the NJCAA National Tournament with Yavapai College in front of our home crowd. We were unfortunate to lose in the national semifinal, but it was an experience I will never forget. BRSN: What’s your favorite Cornell game that you have played in?
JS: My favorite game so far in the season has to be the Lafayette game because of how we came back to win. The team put in a great performance and I was fortunate enough to get the game winner. BRSN: How do you like to prepare for games?
JS: To prepare for games I like to relax and listen to music. While I listen to music I usually visualize and focus on what I’m going to do in the game. Depending on the time of the game, I usually try to get a nap in before. BRSN: What’s your pregame meal?
JS: I don’t like to eat too much before a game. I usually eat a sandwich with some fruit and granola bars. I also drink a lot of water on gamedays. BRSN: Besides soccer, what do enjoy to do?
JS: Besides soccer, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy watching other sports like basketball and football.
