Athlete of the Week Q&A: Catie Smith

The BRSN team selects one Cornell athlete each week whose performance stood out among their peers both within the Cornell athletic community and the Ivy League. This week, we caught up with senior lacrosse defender, Catie Smith, who has posted an outstanding season with the Big Red this year.

BRSN: Catie, thank you for taking the time to speak with us.  You’ve had another amazing season with the Big Red.  What was your mindset heading into this year?

CS: After a fun season last year winning the Ivy Tournament, I came into this season knowing that I wanted our team to win the Ivy League and go as far as possible. We lost a lot of starters, but with two new coaches I knew that this season was a special one.

BRSN: How did you first get involved with lacrosse?

CS: I got involved with lacrosse because I have two older brothers. I’m from outside of Philadelphia, so lacrosse is a very big sport there.

BRSN: Why did you choose Cornell?

CS: I chose Cornell because it was an Ivy League education. I had actually almost decided that I was not going to play lacrosse in college, but after getting an email from one of our former coaches (Suzie Friedrich), I visited the school and made my decision.

BRSN: What is your favorite pre-game meal?

CS: This is kind of a hard question because we have games at all different times .. But for our pregame meals we go to Wegmans and I usually get chicken and mashed potatoes and green beans.

BRSN: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

CS: If I could go anywhere in the world, I think I would go to Africa – I’ve never been and seeing really cool animals would be an adventure.

BRSN: What is one thing most people don’t know about you?

CS: Most people (other than some of my teammates) don’t know that I have to repaint my nails red before every single game or else I can’t stop thinking about it during the game.
