Athlete of the Week Q&A: Chrissy Mayer

The BRSN team selects one Cornell athlete each week whose performance stood out among her peers both within the Cornell athletic community and the Ivy League. This week, we caught up with sophomore soccer goalie, Chrissy Mayer, after posting a shutout in her first collegiate match.

BRSN: What was your mindset going into the game against Fairleigh Dickinson?

CM: It was my first start so I was a little nervous, but I’ve gained a lot of experience playing in the spring and preseason games and I knew my teammates had my back, so I was confident I could get the job done.

BRSN: How did you first get started with soccer, and what kept you in the sport?

CM: I was a really active and competitive kid so my parents signed me up for pretty much every sport when I was little, and soccer ended up being the one that really stuck and that I always loved.

BRSN: Why did you choose Cornell?

CM: I chose Cornell because it was the school that offered me the best opportunities to meet my academic and athletic goals. When I came to visit I loved the campus and the team environment, and knew it was a perfect fit for me.

BRSN: What is your earliest soccer memory?

CM: When I was on my first town travel team called the Spirit, we had this cheer we would chant before every game where we would spell out Spirit and then it would be “Spirit, let’s hear it!” but the whole season we didn’t know we were missing an ‘i’ in spirit, spelling it wrong as “Spirt”

BRSN: What is your favorite pre-game meal?

CM: My go-to is to keep it simple with PB&J and an apple.

BRSN: What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

CM: In another life I would want to play for the Big Red women’s ice hockey team (never played hockey in my life).
