Each week, BRSN sits down for a Q & A session with the Athlete of the Week. This week, we caught up with senior first baseman Cole Rutherford after his contributions to the baseball team’s away series against Columbia last weekend.
BRSN: Cole, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. You gave an amazing performance at Columbia this weekend. Can you walk us through your mindset before, during, and after the series?
CR: My mindset at all points in a series is to do whatever I can do to help my team win. I was lucky to hit a couple of balls well and get a few hits this weekend and help my team in that way but at the end of the day it is all about finding a way to help my team get the W and I am glad that I was able to contribute to a great team series win this weekend and am looking forward to the week ahead.
BRSN: How did you first get involved with baseball?
CR: I fell in love with baseball at the age of 5. My parents signed me up for little league and the game and I just clicked. I never got as involved with other sports as I did with baseball. I fell in love with the game at a young age and have loved playing it ever since.
BRSN: Why did you choose Cornell?
CR: I chose Cornell because of the prestigious education and because I thought that I could come in and contribute to something special on the baseball field. I didn’t know much coming in other than that I would be getting a world class education and still get to play the game that I loved at a high level and at the end of the day that is all that I ever wanted.
BRSN: What’s your favorite pre-game meal?
CR: Most of our games are on the road and we usually get sandwiches between our double headers and my order is always the same. Italian Sub Sandwich.
BRSN: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
CR: If I could go anywhere in the world right now it would probably be home to California hahaha, to visit my parents and girlfriend. Getting towards the end of senior year will make anyone miss the simplicity of home and relaxing with family and friends. But after that if I still got a choice I would want to go and visit Dubai. I used to live there when I was a baby and you hear stories about the crazy tourist attractions that they have so I would want to go there and see what its all about.
BRSN: What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
CR: Probably that I lived in Dubai when I was a baby haha. But since I already spoke to that another thing that most people probably don’t know about me is that this year I have played about 30 seasons in Dynasty mode of the NCAA Football Game for PlayStation 3 with my roommates Jamie Flynn and Paul Balestrieri. A few other of my teammates have played with me as well but those are my two biggest contributors.
