The BRSN team selects one Cornell athlete each week whose performance stood out among her peers both within the Cornell athletic community and the Ivy League. This week, we caught up with senior volleyball player Kit McCarty following her impressive performance in the team’s match against La Salle last weekend.
BRSN: Kit, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. What was your mindset going into the game against La Salle?
KM: The team and I try to keep the same mindset for every game and that is to get super hyped up while at the same time focusing on executing our game plan. Volleyball games are completely all about momentum, so we try to steal that momentum from the beginning.
BRSN: How did you first get started with volleyball, and what kept you in the sport?
KM: I ran cross country in 7th grade and didn’t enjoy it, so I randomly decided to try out for the volleyball team. I had never even seen a volleyball game, but my brother and I started peppering in the backyard a couple days before tryouts and then I made the team.
BRSN: Why did you choose Cornell?
KM: I chose Cornell because it was the perfect fit for me as a student and volleyball player. When I came on my official visit, the coaches, academic advisors, and team were so welcoming and it was easy to imagine myself going here. It’s also close enough that my family is able to come to a lot of my games.
BRSN: What is your favorite pre-game meal?
KM: I love when we have breakfast as our pre-game meal for our games that are early in the day.
BRSN: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
KM: I’ve really been wanting to go backpacking in Thailand.
BRSN: What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
KM: I spent the past two summers interning as well as playing volleyball in Huntington Beach, California.
