Football season is officially underway and excitement is growing as Cornell football’s 2019 season began with a road victory over the Marist Red Foxes last Saturday, September 21st.
David Archer is entering his seventh year as head coach and we are eager to see what plans he has in store for this season. Coach Archer is a former Big Red football captain, moving from student-athlete to assistant coach, to head coach. Archer truly knows what it means to be out on the field and is dedicated to continuing his significant progress as coach. Under his lead, we have seen an impressive 36 All-Ivy selections, two Ivy League Rookies of the Year, two Academic All- Americans and four FCS All-Americans.
Naturally, seniors on any athletic team hope to finish off their college career on a high note. Big Red football is in luck, for this year’s team has a senior class of thirty. With so many men motivated to make their senior year worthwhile, Cornellians hope this will be the year we get over a .500 season.
Last year’s starting quarterback senior Dalton Banks was Cornell’s second leading rusher (225 yards, 2 rushing touchdowns) and leading passer (1,654 yards, 9 touchdown passes), leaving huge shoes to fill with his graduation. Fortunately, this season we have two quarterbacks with the potential to live up to Banks. Will run-heavy senior Mike Catanese come out on top or throw-heavy junior Richie Kenney? On the defensive side, Big Red is bringing back seven of the top eleven tacklers from last season. Jelani Taylor was a lead tackler last year, Lance Blass right behind him and David Jones a talented cornerback chosen for the All-Ivy League Second Team. With so many returning players, a good portion of the team is already used to each other’s game speed, leaving a lot of potential for Big Red. Overall, we look forward to watching this season unfold. Most importantly, we hope to see you on Cornell’s sidelines with high energy November 1st at 6 pm to finish what the Princeton Tigers started last season.
