On February 8th, 1981, the Cornell Men’s Track and Field team defeated Syracuse in Barton Hall with an impressive score of 99-46. Their performance was best summed up by senior Jim Kinnier, who said, “Once the running events got started, it was all over”. This tremendous effort was led by senior Dave Smith who won both the shot put and weight throw events. In the 1600-meter relay race, the team of Al Buckley, Fritz Gaspard, Tom Adams, and Dave Bailey ran a time of 3:23.1 easily defeating the Syracuse team.
This dominance continued in the 3200-meter race relay, in which Bill Geiger, Bob Diaz, Mike Grogan and Kinnier finished in 7:23.96. Grogan and Diaz also placed first and second in the 800-meter dash. Senior Jim Draddy won first place in the 1000-meter dash with a time of 2:30.12 while freshman Dan Richards placed third. The Big Red team also won all three top spots in the 1500-meter run, with Colin McClive, Ken Johnson, and John Randall finishing in first, second, and third respectively. This exceptional performance raised their season record to 1-1. Unfortunately, this was not representative of the rest of their season. They would finish this season in 9thplace in their division.
