  1. David Onuorah

Sophomore David Onuorah headed the Big Red’s defense in an impressive effort to limit the Brown Bears to only 30 percent shooting en route to a 57-49 victory.

Onuorah posted a career-high seven blocks, contributing to a very strong 11-block output from Cornell, both of which made program history for the third-most blocks by an individual and a Cornell team in a single game.

The young forward made his presence felt throughout the contest and when it mattered most down the stretch to help secure a win for the Big Red. Onuorah was key in the closing minutes, as he recorded a block with less than two minutes left, which was followed by a foul and two made free throws from senior Galal Cancer to knot the game at 49.

After taking a four-point lead due to a Cancer steal and layup, the Cornell defense locked down the paint and finished the contest by forcing four straight missed shots from the Bears, which included Onuorah’s final block.

Despite falling 65-57 to Yale on Saturday, the Big Red earned its second victory in the Ivy League, already exceeding last year’s conference total. The squad will once again play host to a pair of Ivy contenders, as Cornell is set to face Penn at 8 p.m. on Friday and Princeton at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening.

  1. Women’s Hockey Offense

The Big Red was on fire, as the offense tallied a total of 15 goals over the weekend by defeating Union, 8-2, and RPI, 7-1. This outstanding performance marked the highest two-game scoring output since Cornell recorded 18 goals in back-to-back matches against Colgate in November of 2012.

On Friday against the Dutchwomen, senior Brianne Jenner led the Big Red with two goals and two assists, but the outburst was mostly spread out, with six different goal scorers. Fellow senior Emily Fulton also notched two goals, while classmate Jillian Saulnier, freshman Erin O’Connor, junior Taylor Woods, and sophomore Sydney Smith all netted one apiece.

Cornell went into the first intermission only leading by one goal, but the squad utilized a five-goal second period to put the game out of reach. The Big Red dominated in every offensive aspect, as the team outshot Union 52-18 and won 36 of the 59 faceoffs.

The next night, Cornell jumped on Rensselaer immediately with two consecutive scores in the opening four minutes of the first period. Again, goals were dispersed among six different players, as Saulnier, Jenner, Fulton, and Smith found the back of the net for the second straight night, while junior Cassandra Poudrier chipped in one, and freshman Morgan McKim scored her first collegiate goal.

With the four-point weekend, the Big Red improved to 12-7-3 overall and 10-3-2 in Ivy League action, which moved the team into a three-way tie for third-place in the conference with St. Lawrence and Clarkson.

After coming from behind to defeat Colgate 3-2 on Tuesday night, Cornell will travel to Quinnipiac on Friday for a 7 p.m. tilt.

  1. Nia Marshall

Sophomore forward Nia Marshall recorded two consecutive double-doubles over the weekend, as the Big Red split a pair of Ivy League matchups with Brown and Yale.

The weekend marked Marshall’s ninth career double-double and fifth of this year. She finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds on Friday and led the squad with 20 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday.

In beating the Bears on Friday, Cornell earned its sixth consecutive victory and remained undefeated in the Ivy League for a short time, before the Bulldogs snapped the team’s win streak and spoiled its perfect league record.

The Big Red still improved to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in Ivy play to take third place in the conference behind Yale and Princeton, who remain tied in the first position.

The squad will face one of these top teams this weekend when Cornell travels to Penn and Princeton, completing a five-game road stretch. The Big Red will tipoff with the Quakers at 7 p.m. on Friday night, while the contest against the Tigers is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday.
