Cornell Rugby’s A team dominated this week in 1966, as the squad played Guelph University of Canada on the upper alumni field and defeated the visitors 21-0. The first score resulted from an early 30-yard penalty, and the Big Red gained momentum following this turning point. Cornell was forced to contain Guelph with hard tackling and persistent pursuit, finally emerging with the win after a hard-fought contest.
The Big Red initially entered the game with the mindset of working hard to make up for the absence of co-captain Tony Evans, who was sidelined with an injury. Doug Stockin, Mike Powell, Terry LaNoue, Tony Clayton, Ben Decker, and a toothless Steve Potters all helped to fill the vacant hole and contributed to Cornell’s wide margin of victory.
The Big Red’s B team also played, dropping a close 5-3 matchup with Syracuse. This game represented the second-to-last match of the season, and the B squad was forced into a tough position, needing a win the following week in order to prove themselves in this final game. The A team, on the other hand, was slated for a contest against the Princeton Tigers to wrap up its fall season and hoped for a win to close out the fall, carrying momentum into the spring.
