On April 18th, 1981 at Schoellkopf Field, the Cornell women’s lacrosse team defeated Brown 10-5. This win was the team’s first ever victory in the Ivy League. While the team celebrated, Coach Cheryl Wolf had her doubts about the team’s performance. “We had some real good moments, but we had our shaky moments also.” These good moments came courtesy of goalie Lori Wick, defensive players Cindy Smith and Joy Quinton, and attackers Linda Miller and Robin Ewing.
The Big Red began this conquest with a score by Miller in the first 36 seconds of the game. Wick blocked 15 shots by Brown until Cornell finally scored, tying the game 1-1. However, this goal did not stop the Big Red from scoring six more times before halftime, while keeping Brown at only one goal. The second half saw a brief resurgence by Brown, but the team was unable to make up the large deficit caused during the first half. The second goal by Ewing secured the win for Cornell.
Cornell finished the season with a record of 6-8, with its victory over Brown its sole victory in the Ivy League conference. This win helped spur the team on to also win its first New York State Championship later in the season. Cornell defeated Cortland, Rochester and William-Smith to obtain the title. The 1981 season marked a new beginning for the women’s lacrosse team as it was the first of three state championships it would win in the next four years. Throughout the next decade, the team grew from going 6-8 in the regular season to 8-5 in 1991, even going 3-3 in the Ivy League that year. The 1981 season was the start of an upward climb that the women made into a truly impressive team.
