This week in 1947, Cornell Tennis scored its 11th straight victory against Colgate. Coach Dick Lewis helped his team sweep a strong Colgate Raiders squad in Hamilton, New York. Only three matches went to three sets, though, as the Big Red had a clean sweep with a score of 9-0 against the Raiders.
Dick Savitt scored over Warren, Colgate’s number one player, in two 6-2 sets. Lenny Steiner had to go into extra games to edge Billy Arnold of the Raiders in the number two singles, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. John Riihiluoma, after not starting strongly, defeated Colgate’s Cathrall, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Co-captain Holly Young won quickly against Ware, 6-3, 6-1. Finally, John Penn defeated MacKenzie by the same scores. In the number six slot, Dick Goldstein had the most lopsided single score against the Raider’s Ford, 6-1, 6-1.
For doubles, the number one combination of Savitt and Steiner crushed Warren and Cathrall, 6-1, 6-1. Penn and Ed Gilbert went to three sets to defeat Ware and MacKenzie, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The only love set was scored in the number three doubles with Riihiluoma and Young in the pair’s massacre of Arnold and Ferguson, 6-0, 6-1.
After this match, Riihiluoma moved up to the number two singles spot, replacing Steiner, who was ineligible in league play for the remainder of the season. Cornell’s next match was set against Dartmouth, and the team went into the following week feeling hopeful to continue its winning streak.
