On Saturday, November 23rd, 1985, the Cornell women Icers dominate the Princeton Tigers, defeating them 6-3 at Lynah Rink. This victory was especially satisfying as it was the first time the women’s team had defeated Princeton in three years. Co-captain Amy Stanzin said, “I wanted to beat them more than any other team.” She had good reason to feel proud of this game, as she contributed three goals and one assist to secure the victory. However, it was not her performance alone that brought them the win. The entire team played extremely well, with the offense outshooting the Tigers 35-20 and eight different players contributing to goals. On defense, while Cornell did allow some goals to slip by, the team was extremely effective at limiting Princeton’s winger Gina Pietrangelo, who had won Rookie of the Year in 1984. Praise is also due to freshman goalie Kathryn LoPresti, who managed 11 saves in her first-ever varsity start.
The true MVP of this game was forward Amy Stanzin, who scored a total of four points from her three goals and one assist. Head coach Dave Harackiewicz seemed to thing she could have done even more. He said, “Amy could have five goals. She can dominate a game…she can score at will.” Stanton holds numerous Cornell NCAA records to back this claim up, including being the 10th all-time in points scored, goals, and assists. Additionally, she is tied for seventh place for the most game-winning goals in Cornell women’s hockey history. Captain Stanzin was certainly quite the remarkable woman and the Lady Icers gained a lot from her performance as both a player on the ice and as a leader to the rest of the team.
