XC Recap 1

Cornell cross country is off to a hot start, with both the men’s and women’s teams winning the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, NY and having top-ten finishes at the highly-competitive Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, PA.

On September 18th, both teams toed the line for the first time this season at the Yellowjacket Invitational at Genesee Valley Park. With senior Isa Meyers leading the way with a first place finish, the women’s team crossed the line with a remarkable score of 30 points, comfortably defeating the other 17 teams, each of which had scores twice as large. On the men’s side, there was a spectacular display of team depth, as 12 Cornellians crossed the line together, claiming 2nd place through 13th place. Senior Matt Fusco and junior Rishabh Prakash led this pack to an enormous victory, only accumulating 20 points en route to defeating the other 15 teams. Perhaps most impressively, both of these teams had their top 5 runners within 45 seconds of each other, with the women having a spread of 44.5 seconds from first to fifth and the men having an astonishing spread of 1.2 seconds.

13 days later, both teams laced up their spikes again, this time at the Paul Short Invitational. In the Women’s Gold race, junior Rebecca Hasser led the way, crossing the line in 20:57.8, good for 43rd place. Isa Meyers and sophomore Izzy Macfarlane finished close behind, taking 47th and 49th respectively. Freshman Sierra Burror and senior Lucy Hurt rounded out the top five, leading to a team finish of 10th place out of 38 with a score of 375 points. The women easily beat out the one other Ivy, Yale, who scored 771 points. In the women’s open race, Cornell placed 5 women in the top 30, with junior Katy Storti leading the charge with a 9th place finish. Later on in the morning, twins Matt and Greg Fusco guided the men’s team to an 8th place finish out of 40 teams in the Gold Race, scoring 292 points. This was also good enough to beat Yale, but the team fell just short of Princeton. Sophomore Thomas Foster had quite the morning in the men’s open race, finishing in 3rd place with a time of 24:36.9. Also in the top ten was freshman Damian Hackett who finished in 8th place, 10 seconds behind Foster.

Cornell returns to action on October 15, where they will send a split squad to compete in both the R.K. Munsey XC Invitational in Albany, NY and the Penn State Invitational in University Park, PA.
